The transmission of the car is the component of the drivetrain that sets which gear the engine is currently using. Like a bike, car engines have different gears that are each designed to function at different speeds.
The engine only works properly when it is in the right gear for the current speed. With a manual transmission, you handle this yourself. You change gears by pressing down on the clutch pedal and moving the gear shifter. With an automatic transmission, the engine will shift gears on its own by measuring its own speed and reacting accordingly. Automatic transmissions are becoming more and more popular over the years.
Manual transmissions are now mostly found in older cars or in high-performance sports cars where the driver likes to have direct control over the gear shifts and the operations of the engine.
