Driving in snow or icy conditions can be dangerous, and we trust our highway crews to do their utmost to keep us safe. When we have a snow or ice event, we can expect them to put down some combination of sand and salt to de-ice the roads so we don't slide off them. Unfortunately, this same salt combination can do damage to the metal exterior of our vehicles. But there are ways to protect your investment.
You know what they say about an ounce of prevention. It's always a good idea before the winter season gets started to bring your vehicle in for a pre-winter inspection. That includes giving it a good waxing. If at all possible, avoid driving whatsoever during or after a snowstorm until the roads are well-cleared.
If you must drive, avoid puddles, as they will often accumulate a larger concentration of road salt. Avoid driving through snow and take care afterwards to give extra attention to getting your tires clean and free of salt. And finally, after you've been driving, take your vehicle through the car wash, preferably one that includes an undercarriage cleaning.
